Gifted Resource
Instructor: Becker
START (Strategies for Teaching and Reaching Talent) is a program for potentially gifted students in kindergarten through third grade. These students are more advanced than their peers and need acceleration and enrichment, as well as opportunities for creative and critical thinking. The START goals are to challenge students to develop their skills in thinking critically, creatively and reflectively. Students are offered a variety of educational opportunities that extend and enrich the county curriculum and support the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs).

The START resource teacher and the regular classroom teacher work together to identify potentially gifted students, to assess the needs of those students, to provide differentiation in the regular classroom and to offer enrichment and acceleration. In addition, the START students come to the resource room each week to work directly with the START teacher. During this time, students work on units that involve above-grade level concepts as well as opportunities to work on choice activities.
For more information on the Identification Process go to the Parent Information Folder and see the file titled "The START Entry Process".

Class News

During our class time in September & October the students will be working on a student profile. For returning students this will be an extension to the students “What Makes Me Unique” folder they created last year. Students will use Thinking Maps, Interest Surveys and Multiple Intelligence activities to help them gain deeper insights to their individual and unique personalities and learning styles.

First grade students will be meeting the Multiple Intelligence Aliens on an imaginary trip to a planet called “Geo”. With their first unit called Geofinity. This unit offers individual lessons in the language of geometry, and in definitions of shapes and angles. There are many hands-on opportunities to explore these concepts. In addition, Geofinity includes language arts objectives, and gives students opportunities for creativity and creative writing.

Second grade students will be working in cooperative groups to crack the case of “The Broken Fish Bowl”. In this problem solving unit, students are cultivating their deductive reasoning skills and applying this to an actual school house mystery. Once these reasoning skills have helped them to narrow their pool of suspects down to one, they will use their persuasive writing skills to announce their findings.

Third grade students will be working in cooperative groups on the unit America, A Home for Every Culture. Through teacher-guided discussion and hands-on activities, students will explore how various cultures have contributed to making the United States the unique and diverse country that it is today.

All classes will be creating individual class Essential Agreements. The students are asked to think for themselves about responsible behavior. Then create a list of the positive behaviors they feel should be displayed while working in our START classroom. Students who break any of our agreed upon behaviors will be required to document their actions and have their parents sign their document.

If you are new to our school or the START program I would like to invite you to write in a million words or less everything you would like for me to know about your child. I want to know your child better and you are my best resource. It can be done in bullets, short sentences, and paragraphs anyway that you feel comfortable. You may send it to school with your child on our next START class or you may email it to me at beckerdr@pwcs.edu

If you are the parent of a continuing student I invite you to have your child write and tell me about something they did, learned or participated in this summer. Have your child bring it to our next class.
